5 Places to Find Your Next Great Blog Post Idea

Back in January, when you wrote your long and ambitious list of New Year’s resolutions, was “become better at blogging” one of your goals? If you’re like me, you probably blogged often for the first few weeks… and then ran out of momentum. We’ve all been there. The best solution is to know where to find inspiration!

The key to keeping up a regular blog schedule is to have a constant flow of ideas. Here are my tips for finding the big idea for your next post:

1. Read the news and talk about it

Keeping up with current news is a great way to find topics to discuss in your blog posts. It may seem repetitive to blog about issues that are already being heavily covered in media. But adding your unique perspective on current events can make for great blog posts – and increase engagement from your readers. Look for ways to connect the topic back to your brand, communications trends, or your own experiences.

2. Reflect on lessons learned

Think to yourself: what have you learned in the past week? Month? Year? If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what would you say? For example, I’ve been working on my post-graduation job hunt for about two months. I wish someone had given me tips about websites I should refer to for job postings. Or how I can convince potential employers that I have the skills of an entry-level position instead of another internship position. Don’t underestimate the power of your acquired expertise. Share your knowledge and your readers will appreciate it!

3. Find something great and explain what makes it so

Once in a while, you’ll come across some great work, whether or not it’s within public relations. Perhaps it was a social media campaign that caught your attention. Blog about it! Talk about why you think the campaign great, pointing out specific aspects such as timing, tactics and creativity. There is much you can learn from analyzing great work. It’s also nice to give other people a shout out for what they’ve produced.

4. Try something new and share your experience

Trying new things is not only a vital aspect of enriching your human experience, but also your professional development. The more things you try, the more you’ll know and be able to offer. A great place to start is by looking at trends. What is the latest social media channel addition? Instead of waiting, explore it yourself. What did you like about it? What did you not like? You can approach this as if you’re writing a review.

Or perhaps you’re traveling somewhere you’ve never been before. Write about your most memorable moment and share your tips for future travelers. Many professionals travel as part of their jobs, so there will always be someone who is curious about what you have to say.

When it comes to negative experiences, be careful and tasteful. Blogging is about honesty. But make sure you’re offering a useful critique and making suggestions for how you can improve your experience at a particular place or with a product or service. Never resort to bashing!

5. Interview someone and write a profile

Networking is a great opportunity to learn about how other people got where they are today. This is inspiring to both you and your readers. Reach out to that great contact you met at last month’s conference and ask if she can spend 20 minutes answering a few questions. Most people will be flattered you asked! Keep your questions concise and professional, yet creative. Clarify how much personal information your subject is willing to share before you publish the post. Make sure to follow up with a thank you to your interviewee after the article is published
